Engage New York ELA Curriculum
Kindergarten
In order to assist educators with the implementation of the Common Core, the New York State Education Department developed curricular modules in P-12 English Language Arts that schools and districts can adopt or adapt for local purposes. Two strands are available within the ELA curricular modules. They are divided up into domains following a theme that incorporated writing, which is at the heart of the CCSS Literacy Standards.

ELA Strands:
  • The Listening and Learning Strand: Builds on the research base that students' listening comprehension abilities outpace their reading comprehension abilities throughout elementary school.
  • The Skills Strand: Teaches the mechanics of both reading and writing, i.e., how to decode and encode written English. Lessons are adaptable and allow for teacher preference and flexibility so practical applications in the classroom can both meet students' needs and be aligned to the shifts and the standards. If you do choose to make significant changes to lessons, the EQuIP Rubric is available to help you evaluate the quality, rigor, and alignment of your adapted lessons.
