Content Area Literacy Shift Kit 6-12 (Shift Three)

The Content Area Literacy Kit was designed to give teachers and administrators of grades 6-12 some background information on what is expected for student achievement with the Illinois Learning Standards in Content Area Literacy and areas other than Language Arts.

  • ISBE Social Science Website: This site allows Illinois teachers access to information and resources  to support social science education throughout the state.
  • Grades 6-12: AdLit.org is a national multimedia project offering information and resources to the parents and educators of struggling adolescent readers and writers. 
  • Grade 6-12: Kelly Gallagher assigns students an "Article of the Week" every Monday morning. By the end of the school year he has them read 35 to 40 articles about what is going on in the world. These articles are listed on the site provided as well as an archived list for past years. 
  • Grade 4-12: Reading Quest: Making Sense in Social Studies is a website designed for social studies teachers who wish to more effectively engage their students with the content in their classes. Strategies can be used with other content. 
  • Grade 4-12: The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with millions of books,recordings, photographs, maps and manuscripts in its collections.
